The study “STEMA RETRO” focuses on the trailer design of the old HP 450. This trailer, which was produced in Grossenhain between 1970 and 1989, was regarded as a cult object at the time, and is still nurtured as a “little darling” in many garages across Germany. Its shape resembles the chassis of towing vehicles more than those of the box trailers common today. Thus, it shines innately with its colorfully powder-coated side walls and lid.

What remains — what is new?

The square side surfaces are original. However, in order to accommodate today’s demands, the trailer was expanded in length and width. The trailer also has a higher permitted total weight of 750 kg. The internal box height of 40 cm corresponds to the original. This is much higher than the trailers produced today, and therefore allows for a much greater load volume.

The new RETRO is equipped ex works with a lid and rear tailgate. The railing and bicycle rack accessory products make it into an interesting travel companion for campers and cyclists. The modern, new floor is made of multi-glued and coated screen printed wood and includes numerous lashing eyelets. Making the new folding drawbar is also being discussed; this is a significant advantage, because the trailer could then be stored vertically, in a space-saving manner, in a carport. For the chassis, a highly modern welded and hot-dip galvanised frame is used. The axles, lighting, and 10” radial tires are also new. The little darling should cost under 1,290 Euros — single-color coated and including lid.
